Revel in your travels discovering the real Europe on a modest budget

50 euro per person per day accommodation and food budget for Western Europe?

What do you reckon is a reasonable budget per person for accommodation and food in the Eurozone such as Italy, Spain and France in western Europe?

I reckon that when I travel with my husband I can find a double room including breakfast for around 60 euro per night if we travel in Spring or Autumn and I use a price comparison site such as HotelsCombined.com and book in advance. If we eat one meal in a restaurant costing around 30 euro and buy food for a picnic for the other meal spending 10 euro. That comes to 50 euro per day per person.

What's your daily accommodation and food budget?

I find that a double room without breakfast often costs around 80Euros even in rural Spain off season, but can also find roughly the same in central Paris. We never book in advance, and enjoy good dining so the budget is more like 100 euros per person per day in the end.

I find that I get better deals by booking in advance although I do appreciate that I may miss out on some wonderful establishment I find during my travels with this approach.

I reckon that in a large city like Paris, outside peak season, there is a lot of of competition between accommodation providers to fill rooms so there can be more bargains in cities than rural locations.

My wife and I could get down to 50 euros between us during hard times. This was mainly travel costs; accommodation via a hostel or couchsurfing. It's certainly possible but not recommended.

I would say 50 each is reasonable and should leave room for slack in some locations. Others will need up to 75.

Last summer we spent about a month in Italy, and managed to spend about 100 Euros a day (two adults and a two year old), and sometimes even less. We found cool places to stay for about 50-75 Euros a night, and most included breakfast. I'm all for eating a big breakfast, so you can have a late lunch and a light dinner.

Hi Karen! Planning to travel solo in mid-October, I've booked a room in central Paris for 63 euros including breakfast. For two people, the same room would be a few euros more.

The hotel offers kitchen privileges, so I'm planning to take advantage of that savings opportunity.

As I learn more about real costs, I'll be glad to share here! I'm leaving three weeks from today.
